Danger Dennis Disk version

In this version we switched the game to Disk-based access, all required files are now loaded on demand.
After starting the game, a fastloader is installed to speed up all disk operations.

We initially tried to use memory injection for the web-based preview version, but this caused the game to malfunction.
Because of this, the browser preview currently has to load and start the game in the regular way.  This means that the startup of the game takes a bit longer than usual in the web version.

When the game starts, the first thing you’ll see is the Danger Dennis intro, where the story is explained with images showing why Dennis has to run through the levels to collect the popcorn again.  You can skip the intro at any time by simply pressing the fire button on your joystick.

In the main menu, you can start the game or switch to the game options menu. There you can choose whether to skip the tutorial levels, and whether you want to play with SFX or music. You can also enable support for the FunMP3 module, which allows the C64 to play MP3 audio during gameplay. After completing each round, you are now rewarded with bonus points based on how quickly you finished the level.
A new gameplay element has been added: the trampoline, which allows you to jump to higher platforms. You can also collect an extra life, just like the already familiar energy drinks. Because of this, the controls have been slightly adjusted, you now have to press down to pick up an item.

Unfortunately, we discovered that the performance of the FunMP3 player does not seem suitable for fast-paced games. It is impossible to trigger samples quickly, because every MP3 call introduces a noticeable delay. As a result, we cannot start multiple samples in rapid succession.  In contrast to the emulator version using VICE, where samples play instantly without any noticeable delay, real hardware behaves differently.
Since we are developing the game without access to actual C64 hardware, all our testing so far has been done in the emulator, and within VICE the FunMP3 module performs exactly as intended. Unfortunately, this does not reflect the behavior on physical hardware.

Unfortunately, this behavior will likely force us to remove the MP3 sound effects from the game, since they do not work in the way we had originally hoped. What will remain, however, is the ability to play the original Amiga soundtrack as MP3 audio during gameplay.

In this version, all files required for the MP3 fun are still included, so feel free to try the game in your VICE emulator together with the FunMP3 module. The game is a lot of fun, and with MP3 support it feels even more arcade-like than it already does.

In the next version, we will remove the MP3 samples unless there is an improvement on the FunMP3 module’s side.
We will instead focus more on SID sound effects.
